The Course
The Rock the Creek Running Festival starts in Lake Needwood, 15800 Needwood Lake Circle, Derwood, MD. That’s the northern most spot in Rock Creek Park (RCP). We will start (and finish) in Picnic Area Two, a bucolic, tree-covered area.
Half, Full and Ultra Marathon
More details will follow but these race courses will follow the relay course.
Relay Details:
60 mile Rock The Creek Relay: Please note that we are finalizing the route but the structure will be the same as the one outlined below for the 30 mile relay.
30 mile Rock The Creek Relay:
The first runner will head southeast to the RCP bike path and continue for approximately 4.3 miles to Aspen Hill Park and Transition One.
At that location, the wrist band will be handed to runner two who will continue down the bike path to Franklin where he/she will turn left for two blocks to the transition at Kensington Parkwood Elementary School. This leg is approximately 5.35 miles in total.
The next runner will head back to RCP and head southeast on the bike path toward East West Highway. Just shy of the railroad bridge, the runner will bear right and come out of the park on Susanna Lane, which they will follow to the end at Jones Mill Road. They will then turn left for about 50 feet to the intersection, cross over and continue on the sidewalk on the left hand side of Jones Bridge Road, heading against traffic, for four tenths of a mile to North Chevy Chase Elementary School.
For planning purposes, Legs 1 and 6 will each be around 4.3 miles, legs 2 and 5 will each be around 5.45 miles and legs 3 and 4 will each be around 4.6. So, it will take your team somewhere between four and five hours to cover the approximately 29 miles at paces of 8-10 minutes per mile.
